  • A significant multi-agency operation today successfully rescued 115 boys and girls from Assam, many of them minors, who were trapped in a human trafficking racket in Bihar's Samastipur district
  • Nine individuals have been arrested in connection with the case

In a major breakthrough against human trafficking, 115 young individuals from Assam, including 48 girls and 67 boys, were rescued in the early hours of Wednesday from Samastipur district in Bihar. The extensive operation, spearheaded by Mission Mukti Foundation in collaboration with the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and overseen by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), brought to light a sophisticated network preying on vulnerable youths from the northeastern state. Many of those freed are reportedly minors.

Following the rescue, law enforcement authorities have apprehended nine individuals believed to be key members of the trafficking ring. Investigations into the illicit operation have begun to unravel a deeply entrenched network that lured victims with false promises before subjecting them to exploitation far from their homes.

Reports indicate that traffickers specifically targeted economically disadvantaged families residing in regions along the India-Bhutan border, particularly in Assam’s Tamulpur district. Youths from areas such as Tamulpur, Bhairabkunda, and Dimakuchi in Udalguri district, as well as Biswanath Chariali, Doomdooma, and Mangaldai, were enticed with fraudulent offers of government jobs, often in the Agriculture Department. Victims were reportedly coerced into paying "employment fees" under these false pretenses.

Instead of legitimate employment, the rescued individuals were transported to Samastipur, Bihar, where they were confined within what appeared to be a fake call centre. Here, they were allegedly subjected to various forms of exploitation, including forced labour and coercion into dubious network marketing schemes, highlighting the deceptive and coercive tactics employed by the traffickers.

The successful operation underscores the persistent challenges of human trafficking in the region and the critical need for continued vigilance and inter-agency cooperation to dismantle such criminal enterprises. Further investigations are expected to reveal more details about the full extent of this cross-state racket.
