Deepfake is a digital technique that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to convincingly replace one person's likeness with another.
Digital desk: Delhi Police in Andhra Pradesh on Saturday arrested the main culprit in the case related to actor Rashmika Mandanna's deepfake video.
In November 2023, a deepfake video of Mandanna went viral on social media. The Bollywood actor's face was substituted in the video for the face of British-Indian influencer Zara Patel, who was wearing a black workout garment.
Following the event, the Delhi Police reported the occurrence under the Indian Penal Code, 1860's sections 465 (forgery) and 469 (damaging reputation), as well as sections 66C (identity theft) and 66E (privacy violation) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
Rashmika Mandanna, who is well-known for her parts in movies like "Pushpa," "Mission Majnu," and "Animal," expressed her worries about technological abuse after her deepfake video went viral. Mandanna expressed on social media that she was "really hurt" after watching the video.
The government was also compelled by the video to send a strong warning to social media companies about the laws that control these kinds of deepfakes and the consequences that go along with them.

Similar to this, earlier this week, a deepfake video of former cricket player Sachin Tendulkar surfaced on social media. Tendulkar is seen promoting an online game in the altered video, using his daughter Sara as an example, who makes Rs 1.8 lakh a day from her predictions.
In relation to the video, the Mumbai Police have filed a case against an unidentified person.
