Digital Desk: According to sources, a man was detained by the Mumbai police today after making threats against Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), and his family.

At the Reliance Foundation Hospital in Girgaon, Mumbai, this morning, the individual, known as Afzal, made three to four threat calls on a landline number, according to officials.

The police were able to locate the suspect after discovering the phone number from which he had made the calls.

According to an official who was reported by the news agency PTI, a preliminary inquiry indicates that the caller may be mentally ill.

The individual is currently being questioned by police after a case was filed.

An appeal against the national government's continued provision of protection for Mukesh Ambani and his family in Mumbai was dismissed by the Supreme Court last month.

After the Tripura High Court approved a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the government's provision of protection to the Ambanis, the centre petitioned the Supreme Court.

Based on an assessment of the threat perception by the centre, the Maharashtra government provided Mr. Ambani and his family with security coverage.

An abandoned automobile with explosives was discovered last year close to Mr. Ambani's residence, exposing a significant conspiracy involving ex-police officers.

Apparently addressed to Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani, a handwritten letter was also discovered in the automobile, officials had reported at the time.
