Digital Desk: The second and last phase of the Manipur Assembly elections began today (March 5) from 7 am in 22 constituencies distributed over six districts around the state. As per the Election Commission of India (ECI), the polling station will be open till 4 pm. Lilong, Thoubal, Wangkhem, Heirok, Wangjing Tentha, Khangabo, Wabgai, Kakching, Hiyanglam, Sugnoo, Jiribam, Chandel (ST), Tengnoupal (ST), Phungyar (ST), Ukhrul (ST), Chingai (ST), Karong (ST), Mao (ST), Tadubi (ST), Tamei (ST), Tamenglong (ST), and Nungba (ST) are the 22 constituencies that are going for poll today. Reportedly, in the second phase of the Manipur Assembly elections, there are 1,247 voting stations. In this phase, approximately 8.38 lakh voters will exercise their right to vote. There are 92 candidates in the race, including two women, whose electoral fate will be decided in the second phase of the Assembly elections. As per repoprts, covid-19 positive or quarantined voters will be permitted to vote at the eleventh hour, between 3 and 4 pm. On March 10, the results of the Manipur Assembly Elections will be announced. Notably, the current Manipur government took office on March 20, 2017, and will leave office on March 19, 2022. Manipur has a total of sixty assembly constituencies, with 38 of them went for polls in the first round of voting held on February 28. According to the Election Commission of India, in the first phase of Manipur Assembly elections, the state recorded an average voter turnout of 78.30 per cent. Notably, the BJP has decided to go alone this time and is fighting all 60 seats. The Congress, on the other hand, has formed an alliance group named Manipur Progressive Secular Alliance (MPSA) with six major parties including Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Forward Bloc, Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), and Janata Dal. In the 2017 Manipur Assembly elections, the Congress came out on top with 28 seats, followed by the BJP with 21 seats, on the other hand, the National People's Party (NPP) and the Naga People's Front (NPF) both received four seats, while the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) only received one. As a result, the BJP earned 36.28 per cent of the vote, while the Congress received 35.11 per cent.
