Digital Desk: In the midst of continuous ethnic clashes that have been going on in the state for more than two months, a woman was shot dead outside a school in Manipur's Imphal West district by unidentified assailants, the police said.

The incident has caused widespread alarm in the area, where schools reopened just a day ago. The woman has yet to be identified, the police said.

The incident occurred a day after security forces disrupted a clash between two armed groups from the Mapao and Awang Sekmai regions in the Kangpokpi district, according to the news agency PTI.

In a separate incident, a mob in the Thoubal area set fire to the residence of an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) personnel after he successfully prevented protesters from looting weaponry from a police armory.

The IRB personnel, who were part of a unit protecting the armory, became a target after preventing a riotous crowd from attacking the 3rd IRB camp at Wangbal.

The deadly confrontation led to the death of a 27-year-old man, Ronaldo, who was seriously injured and eventually died en route to a hospital in Imphal.

An additional ten persons were injured in the clash, with six in critical condition being treated at an Imphal hospital.

In light of these incidents, the Manipur government has issued a five-day extension of the suspension of internet services across the state till July 10.

The internet ban was put into effect on May 3 in an effort to prevent the spread of hate speech, inflammatory images, and video messages that could potentially instigate further unrest.

The present unrest in Manipur began after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized to oppose the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

Since then, the clash has claimed over 100 lives, injured hundreds more, and displaced thousands into relief camps.
