Congress termed such arrests as the hunting down of democratic instincts and voices by the new Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma…

Digital Desk: In a surprise, several  Congress leaders in Guwahati were arrested by the police and locked up in a hotel before the protest demanding that police brutality on Congress workers must stop. Indian Youth Congress National President Uday Bhanu and Assam Pradesh Youth Congress President Zubair Anam, along with party workers, were there in Hotel Iris when they were detained.

The leaders had come out into the streets to join protests spearheaded by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee against the BJP government. The protest was on account of the death by injuries sustained during the “Raj Bhavan Chalo” march of Mridul Islam, a member of the Congress Legal Cell. The protest formed part of a country-wide stir organized by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) for the
release of the document and was fraught with police action, involving the use of tear gas with which Islam was critically injured.

Senior APCC leader and President Bhupen Bora, who had spearheaded the previous march, planned to stage another rally at Janata Bhawan today. But in an anticipatory action, the police have nabbed Congress leaders Bhupen Bora, jakir Hussain (APCC Working President), Ripun Bora (former APCC President), Ratul Kalita (Social Media Chairperson), and MLA Diganta Barman. Bhupen Bora has been whisked away to the 10th Assam Police Battalion at Kahilipara, where he has
been confined till now.

Congress termed such arrests as the hunting down of democratic instincts and voices by the new Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma. But two groups of Congress workers proceeded to Janata Bhawan and were adamant with their pleas for justice. The APCC had intended to pay glowing tribute to Mridul Islam, arrange for interfaith prayer meetings, and file a memorandum to the governor pointing to the need for a judicial investigation.

Such arrests, without prior notice, have invited the fury of Congress supporters.
