Anan Tanti was accused of raping and murdering a 12-year-old girl in Margherita under the Tinsukia district on May 1.

Digital Desk: Anan Tanti, the accused in the Margherita rape and murder case, was shot by police on Thursday night as he was being brought to the police station from Arunachal Pradesh, and it is claimed that he tried to escape their custody.

Superintendent of Police (SP), Tinsukia, Gaurav Abhijit Dilip talking to the media said, "The accused tried to escape police custody and was hurt when they opened fire, the man added. To receive medical care, he is being transported to the closest hospital."

Notably, an investigation was launched after the body of the young girl was found in a septic tank in Jayanagar in Margherita, and the accused Anan Tanti was found hiding in the Deomali region close to the Assam-Arunachal border. He was then arrested by the Tinsukia Police.
