Digital Desk: Law enforcement agencies in Mizoram have seized heroin worth over Rs 271 crore on international markets since January 2023, an official said on Monday. According to the official, the state's Excise and Narcotics Department seized 27.7 kilograms of heroin, mostly smuggled from Myanmar, worth around Rs 138.5 crore between January and June of this year.

"During the same period, the department also seized 15.3 kg of ganja (cannabis) and 4 kg of methamphetamine tablets," he said. The official also stated that between January and May, the Mizoram Police seized 26.5 kilograms of heroin worth around Rs 132.5 crore, in addition to recovering 210.7 kg of pseudoephedrine tablets and 25.38 kg of methamphetamine tablets.

He stated that last year, the police seized 49.3 kg of heroin and 29.8 kg of pseudoephedrine tablets.

Meeting of the Core Committee on the War against Drugs

A meeting of the 'Core Committee on Ruihol Do' (War against Drugs), chaired by Mizoram Social Welfare and Excise Minister Lalrinawma, raised worry over the rise in rural drug abuse in rural areas.

During the meeting, it came to light that the threat of drug use in rural areas is greater than in cities. To combat the problem of drugs, it was decided to conduct a public awareness campaign in the state. The Mizoram government has given Rs. 3 crore to the core committee to address the problem.

Officials from the relevant departments, as well as members from the Mizoram Aids Control Society (MSACS), the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA), and the Mizo Students' Union (MSU), attended the meeting.

Drugs worth 1,300 kg were recovered in Haryana

Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij stated on Friday (June 16) that almost 1,300 kilograms of drugs were seized during a 15-day police operation against drug traffickers. Haryana police initiated 'Operation Dhwast' on June 1 and continued until June 15, arresting 354 persons.

Vij stated that 6.28 kg of heroin, 0.0088 kg of morphine, 15.75 kg of opium, 793.35 kg of poppy husk, 8.1 kg of poppy plants, 22.087 kg charas, 409.90 kg of ganja, and other drugs were recovered. The accused were apprehended from several districts, including Ambala, Bhiwani, Charkhi Dadri, Faridabad, Fatehabad, Ambala Cantt, Gurugram, Hansi, Jhajjar, Jind, Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Mahendragarh, and Nuh.
