  • The relentless southwest monsoon has triggered widespread devastation across several Indian states, with Assam emerging as the worst-affected, accounting for a significant portion of the more than 120 fatalities reported nationally

India is grappling with the severe impact of the southwest monsoon, which has unleashed widespread flooding and landslides across Assam, Gujarat, and Kerala. The cumulative death toll from these rain-induced calamities has tragically surpassed 120 lives, affecting hundreds of thousands of people across the affected regions.

Assam, in particular, has borne the brunt of the monsoon’s fury. The state has recorded the highest number of fatalities, with 82 people succumbing to the floods. Incessant rainfall and overflowing rivers have inundated vast swathes of the state, impacting nearly 1.78 lakh individuals across seven districts. While water levels have begun to recede in several areas, thousands remain displaced, and extensive damage to agriculture, vital infrastructure, and public utilities has been reported.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) noted a slight improvement in the situation, with the number of affected individuals decreasing from over 1.92 lakh to approximately 1.78 lakh. However, the challenge persists as 349 villages continue to be impacted in districts like Golaghat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, Bajali, Dhemaji, and Sonitpur. Charaideo district is currently experiencing the most severe conditions.

Beyond the Northeast, Gujarat also faced severe flooding following heavy rainfall earlier in July, while Kerala has been battling its own share of rain-induced landslides and flash floods. The ongoing monsoon season continues to pose significant challenges to disaster management efforts across these vulnerable states.
