Digital Desk: Mulayam Singh Yadav, a former chief minister and the founder of the Samajwadi Party, passed away earlier in the day after a protracted illness. On Monday, a 300-strong convoy of vehicles surged down the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh bearing his body. Age-wise, he was 82.

A video of the enormous caravan hurtling along the deserted freeway was extensively circulated online, and it also showed individuals dousing some of the vehicles with flowers. The body was being transported by convoy to Saifai in Etawah, UP, where he will be cremated on Tuesday at 3 o'clock.

Another video shows Mulayam Singh Yadav's son Akhilesh Yadav waiting at a gas station when the ambulance carrying his body stopped there to fill up on fuel.

Leaders from all political parties, including the incumbent BJP's home minister Amit Shah and prime minister Narendra Modi, have paid respect to Mulayam Singh Yadav. In addition to expressing sorrow, President Droupadi Murmu described the death of the man as a "irreparable loss" for India.

According to Modi, Mulayam Yadav was a "key soldier for democracy during the Emergency" and was admired by many people. Rahul Gandhi, a member of Congress, referred to him as "a true warrior of grassroots politics."

Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has declared a three-day state of mourning in the former SP leader's honour and stated that full state honours will be accorded at the final rites.

While receiving medical care at Gurugram's Medanta Hospital, the seasoned Samajwadi Party politician passed away on Monday. He had been on life-saving medication for the past few weeks because of his serious condition. Akhilesh Yadav tweeted, "Mere adarniya pitaji aur sabke netaji nahi rahe - Akhilesh Yadav," confirming the news of his father's passing.

Mulayam Singh was the three times-elected chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and the minister of defence for the union government. Ten times as an MLA and seven times as a Lok Sabha MP, he was elected.
