Digital Desk: On September 16, theatres across will celebrate National Cinema Day by charging a fixed rate of Rs 75 for admission. This celebration is sponsored by the Multiplex Association of India (MAI). The fact that a single movie ticket costs between Rs 200 and Rs 300 will startle moviegoers. The statement comes a few days after American movie theatres declared that on September 3 they will celebrate National Cinema Day and offer tickets for as little as $3.

Why do we observe National Cinema Day?

As a "thank you" to moviegoers, the theatre owners are commemorating the occasion to honour the successful reopening of theatres after COVID-19.

Through this programme, the movie theatres also hope to reach out to those who haven't started attending to the movies since the outbreak.

More than 4,000 participating theatres will provide the one-day only deal.

Brahmastra tickets for Rs 75

On National Cinema Day, viewers will be able to view new films free Rs 75, including the Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt thriller Brahmastra.

Tickets for the film, which will be released on September 9, will be available for purchase at the standard price for a week prior to this one-day-only price reduction.

Will tickets really be at Rs 75?

Though the cinemas in India will charge a flat amount of Rs 75 for every film on September 16, online third-party apps or websites can levy additional taxes.

For instance, BookMyShow is still liable to charge additional internet fees and GST on top of the Rs 75 price tag. If moviegoers want to save every penny, they can wait in queues like in the old days.

National Cinema Day's past

The innovative project was launched with the goal of reminding people how much fun going to the movies can be. National Cinema Day might become an annual event, similar to Black Friday, if it goes well.
