The flood situation in Assam's Nazira sub-division has shown significant improvement, with water levels receding and conditions largely under control across most areas. However, challenges persist in 23 specific locations that remain affected by the recent deluge, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
Co-District Commissioner Pratibha Meshram highlighted that the most severe impact of the floods was observed in the bordering areas of the sub-division. These regions have reported extensive land erosion and widespread devastation, significantly altering the landscape and livelihoods of residents.
Meshram specifically pointed out the Napalikuti area, which has experienced substantial land devastation. She noted that while efforts for land reclamation are ongoing, the scale of destruction in Napalikuti is such that it will likely necessitate comprehensive rehabilitation programmes. Discussions are currently underway to formulate these crucial recovery plans.
The Nazira sub-division, located within Sivasagar district, was among the regions hardest hit by the recent wave of floods. Incessant rainfall, combined with the downstream flow of water from neighbouring Nagaland, led to the inundation of numerous villages. This forced thousands of residents to abandon their homes and seek refuge in safer locations, underscoring the widespread disruption caused by the natural calamity.
