Digital Desk: Sreenivasan Jain, a dubious news anchor, announced his retirement from the communist propaganda news station NDTV on Saturday (January 28).
He confirmed his action on social media. "Hi everybody," he stated in a tweet. Today marks the end of an incredible nearly three-decade run at NDTV. It was not an easy decision to resign, but it is what it is. More on that later."
Sreenivasan Jain's career as a news anchor had been troubled by controversy. In July of last year, he posted a $50,000 surety bond to secure bail for questionable fact-checker Mohammed Zubair, whom he characterised as a "close buddy."
He questioned India's indigenously manufactured Covid-19 vaccine, Covaxin, in August 2021. He made a surprising assertion that Dr N K Arora, Chairperson of the National Vaccine Advisory Group, indicated that the early batches of Covaxin 'were not of the correct grade'. He later removed the tweet.
Surprisingly, Sreenivasan Jain has been humiliated on several occasions by his guests.
"I believe you are prejudiced. I believe NDTV is biased towards the government... The press is not a political creature. "You're supposed to be objective," billionaire Rakesh Jhunjhunwala once said to him.
He also attempted to provoke criticism of the Modi government via HDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh. Instead of having his wish granted, he was informed to his face that all the talk about suppressing dissent and intolerance was overstated and that the government was willing to talk about it.
The great climax of his career, however, was his attempt to downplay a deadly conspiracy to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Ishrat Jahan.
He said that terrorists like Ishrat Jahan, who was shot dead by Gujarat Police during an encounter, did not come to assassinate the then-Gujarat Chief Minister but to carry out a 'chota-mota' (small-time) bomb attack.
Under the guise of telling viewers about the CBI probe into the encounter, the NDTV journalist insinuated that because Ishrat Jahan had just come to carry out a minor terror attack, she should have been treated properly by Gujarat police.
While emphasising that the terrorist deserved a "fair trial," he attempted to portray terrorism as a "no-big-deal" issue. His ruthless attempt to provide intellectual cover fire to a murdered terrorist was the high point of his time at NDTV.
