New Delhi: The recently detected new covid variant Omicron which was first reported in South Africa, is now gradually spreading across the globe, forcing the other countries to impose necessary guidelines for the travelers coming from ‘at-risk’ countries.

The new variant, first detected in South Africa, has spread across 20 countries, including India. The other countries are -

  • Ghana
  • Australia
  • Italy
  • Denmark
  • Netherland
  • Germany
  • Portugal
  • Spain
  • Japan
  • Sweden
  • Reunion Island
  • UAE
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Norway
  • Ireland
  • Switzerland
  • South Korea
  • America
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • United Kingdom
  • Austria
  • Israel
  • Hong Kong
  • Brazilian
  • Botswana
  • Nigeria
  • Czech Republic
  • South Africa

Notably, on Monday, the Government of India had issued guidelines for all International travelers traveling to India. In its new guidelines, the GOI mandates that all international travelers have to provide their 14 days’ travel history and upload a covid negative test report on the official website from December 1 onwards.

Further, the travelers from ‘at-risk’ countries will have to undergo a mandatory 7-day quarantine, even if they test negative for the virus.

Moreover, travelers coming to Mumbai from South Africa will have to be quarantined and if found positive, genome sequencing will be done.

Notably, in India, states government like Gujarat and Maharashtra have issued a guideline to fight the new strain.

The Maharashtra government announced that all international travelers would have to follow the central government’s guidelines. All domestic passengers will have to carry a covid vaccination certificate or an RT-PCR test report valid for 72 hours.

The Gujarat government has announced that travelers landing at the airports in Gujarat from the ‘at-risk’ countries will have to undergo a mandatory RT-PCR test.

Notably, till now, the Assam government has raised no concerns for the new variant, which is knocking on the doors and may arrive at the state at any time as today two Omicron cases have been reported in Karnataka, which the Union Health Ministry announced.

To curb the widespread of the new variant, the countries that impose national lockdown are:    

  • Austria
  • Slovakia
  • Germany
  • Russia
  • Netherland
  • Portugal
  • Czech Republic.
