Digital Desk: Guwahati recorded a fresh COVID-19 case on Thursday, December 21, marking a concerning development in the region's battle against the pandemic. A 28-year-old woman, reportedly returning from Sweden, tested positive for the virus, prompting heightened caution among health authorities.

Assam Health Minister Keshab Mahanta emphasized the directive for the Health Department to maintain alertness against potential surges. Despite the single case in Guwahati, Mahanta reassured the public, stating no new cases or variants had been identified in Assam.

"Assam has not reported any new COVID-19 cases as of now. We have not found any new COVID- 19 variants in the state," Mahanta said.

The WHO's classification of JN.1 as a variant of interest, distinct from its parent lineage, BA.2.86, underscores global concerns over evolving strains. Gauhati Medical College and Hospital's official affirmed readiness, citing a dedicated COVID block within the hospital, affirming the preparedness in managing potential upticks in cases.
