Diabetes has already been considered a risk factor for worse Covid-19 respiratory results...

Digital Desk: As Covid-19 cases continue to appear in many parts of the world, a recent study suggests that it may be connected to new cases of diabetes. Coronavirus's effects continue to wreak havoc on the earth.

The British Columbia Centre for Disease Control and St Paul's Hospital in Vancouver conducted a large investigation to determine the link between new diabetes cases and SARS-Cov-2 infection. The study discovered that SARS-CoV-2 infection was linked to an increased incidence of diabetes.

people with diabetes have already been linked to more severe COVID-19 respiratory outcomes, and SARS-CoV-2 infection has been linked to an outbreak of underlying diabetic symptoms.

Researchers assessed 6,29,935 people who tested positive for Covid-19 and were at an increased risk of acquiring diabetes. The researchers examined the British Columbia Covid-19 Cohort, a surveillance network that connects data on Covid infections and immunizations.

The study revealed that patients who were diagnosed with Covid-19 were more likely to develop type 1 or type 2 diabetes and that Covid was responsible for 3-5% of new diabetes cases overall. "In this cohort study, SARS-CoV-2 infection was associated with a higher risk of diabetes and may have contributed to a 3% to 5% excess burden of diabetes at the population level," the paper stated.

"Another way to put it is that out of 100 people with diabetes, 3-5% have Sars-CoV-2 infection," University of British Columbia Prof Naveed stated.

While the SRS-CoV-2 virus primarily affects the respiratory system, other organ systems may also be impacted, resulting in a variety of acute and chronic consequences.
