Digital Desk: In a shocking act of animal cruelty, a 16-year-old domesticated elephant named Mangal Singh was brutally attacked by poachers in Laxmipathar, Digboi.


Taking advantage of heavy rainfall, the perpetrators severed both of the elephant's tusks while it was tethered near a forested area.


The incident came to light after local residents were alerted by the animal's distressed cries and immediately notified the Digboi Forest Department.


Emergency medical intervention was promptly arranged to address the elephant's injuries.  


Currently, Mangal Singh remains in critical condition, suffering from severe and continuous bleeding at the sites where the tusks were removed.


Treatment is currently being carried out under the supervision of veterinary experts from outside the state, along with the State Veterinary Department.


The elephant is reportedly owned by an individual from Margherita.
