Members of the opposition from the Trinamool Congress, Congress, CPI, and CPI(M) condemned the bill's introduction as an attempt to 'destroy'...

Digital Desk: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kirodi Lal Meena moved to introduce a private member's Bill on the Uniform Civil Code in Rajya Sabha on Friday (December 9). Members of the opposition criticized the move and demanded a vote on the proposed Bill.

A legislator introduces a private member's bill, which means it has not been tabled on behalf of the executive.

By abolishing personal laws, the UCC seeks to establish a uniform set of laws that will be applied to all citizens of the nation, regardless of their community, for everything from marriage, adoption, inheritance, succession, to divorce.

The bill, introduced in the Upper House by Meena, aims to create a panel to prepare a UCC. Meena introduced the Bill with the aim of getting it implemented across the country. The bill proposed the formation of a national inspection and investigation body to prepare a Uniform Civil Code.

Meanwhile, members of the opposition from the Trinamool Congress, Congress, CPI, and CPI(M) condemned the bill's introduction as an attempt to 'destroy' the country's social fabric and unity in diversity. They demanded that the bill be withdrawn, while Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar urged for division and the introduction of the bill on the UCC.

The Bill was passed with 63 votes in favour and 23 votes against it.
