Digital Desk: The Bengal leg of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra on Wednesday saw the car that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was traveling in being "targeted" and its windscreen smashed, according to the party.
Bengal unit chief and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that the incident occurred this morning after the yatra entered the state's Malda district from Bihar's Katihar.
Although Gandhi was not hurt, the attack caused the vehicle's rear windowpane to be shattered.
Images from the scene showed Gandhi getting out of a sport utility vehicle and looking at the windshield damage. Sitting on the car's roof, the Wayanad MP waved to the excited crowds who had gathered along the road as it moved slowly.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury speculated, "Maybe someone in the back pelted a stone in the crowd." "The police are overlooking that. Overlooking can lead to a lot of issues. Although this is a little incident, something else might have occurred."
"Our car windshield has been broken, but our yatra won't be deterred and the INDIA alliance won't bow down," senior Congress politician Jairam Ramesh declared. Let me remind you that the chief minister of Bengal has stated that one of her goals is to strengthen the INDIA bloc."
It's interesting to note that Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was also scheduled to begin her 'Jonosanjog Yatra' at English Bazar in Malda on Wednesday. The Chief Minister's visit prompted reports that the two districts' security measures were strengthened.
