Digital Desk: The Supreme Court of Pakistan ruled on Thursday that the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan by the anti-graft agency was unlawful and ordered his immediate release. "What happened was injustice for Imran Khan," the Pakistan Supreme Court stated.
PTI chief Imran Khan was detained by Pakistani Rangers from outside the Islamabad High Court on Tuesday. He was apprehended in connection to the Al-Qadir Trust case. On May 1, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in Rawalpindi issued an arrest warrant against him.
Following his arrest, Imran Khan supporters attacked the Pakistan Army headquarters in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, as well as the Corps Commander's residence in Lahore. Violence flared in several Pakistani cities.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party petitioned the Supreme Court on Wednesday, challenging the Islamabad High Court's verdict that supported Imran Khan's arrest.
On Thursday, a three-judge bench of Pakistan's Supreme Court, comprised of Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, and Justice Athar Minallah, directed the nation's anti-corruption watchdog to bring the former prime minister as it heard his appeal against his dramatic arrest in a graft case.
Following that, the Pakistan Supreme Court found that Imran Khan's arrest was unlawful and ordered his immediate release from jail. The Supreme Court also ruled that no one can be arrested outside of court.
Imran Khan has been summoned to appear before the Islamabad High Court on Friday.
