Umakanta passed away this morning at 7:10 a.m. after a prolonged illness. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

Digital Desk: On Wednesday morning, Umakanta Bairagi, a renowned Tokari Geet artist, passed away at the age of 80 at his home in Hengrabari, Guwahati.

Umakanta passed away this morning at 7:10 a.m. after a prolonged illness. He was a recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

Umakanta, who was born in 1942 in Dibrugarh, has received several notable honours, including the Pratima Pandey Award and the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Sanghati Award.

He received the dignified title of Bairagi from Dibrugarh Radio Station in 1971.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, expressed his sorrow over the folk artist's demise.

He stated on Twitter that the loss of Umakanta Bairagi to the state's cultural and social sectors is irreparable.
