- Boris Johnson appointed Rishi Sunak, aged 42, as Chancellor of the Exchequer in February 2020. It was his first full-time cabinet post.
- He was in a tight spot because of his wife's non-dom tax status, his green card in the US, and the idea that he was hesitant to respond to Britain's cost-of-living issue.
- He was punished for defying the Covid shutdown by attending a Downing Street event.
- During the pandemic, however, he gained enormous popularity after putting together a large package worth tens of billions of pounds to help businesses and employees.
- Rishi Sunak is married to Akshata Murty, the daughter of Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy. They have two daughters. They met as college students in California.
According to British media, this development comes after British Prime Minister Boris Johnson agreed to resign, ending an unprecedented political crisis over his future.
In the wake of ethics scandals, Johnson was requested to resign, but he had rejected requests from his Cabinet, including recently appointed chancellor Nadhim Zahawi.
A Conservative leadership election will be held this summer, and a new prime minister will be in office by the party conference in October.
