Digital Desk: The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) will have a new president and general secretary, Utpal Sarma and Shankar Jyoti Baruah, respectively. The decision was made on Friday in Morigaon, Assam, at the continuing convention of the student body.
After Dipanka Kumar Nath, the previous president of AASU, resigned due to personal reasons, Utpal Sarma was given temporary leadership of the student organisation.
In the meantime, Shankar Jyoti Baruah, who held the position of student body general secretary already, was granted an additional term.
After Dipanka Kumar Nath resigned, Utpal Sarma and Shankar Jyoti Baruah assumed leadership roles at AASU. Both leaders formally received their responsibilities during the Morigaon conference.
"For the second time, the representatives of AASU have shown faith in me and handed me the responsibility of carrying on as the general secretary," Baruah said in response to his reappointment.
He promised to seek the blessings and collaboration of the Assamese people as well as the members of AASU while leading with commitment, integrity, and loyalty to the organization's constitution.
Remarkably, the change in leadership occurs after the Union decided to raise the membership age to 40 years old during its 17th general meeting on 22 November in Duliajan town, Dibrugarh district.
All AASU leaders and members who are older than 40 must retire from the association, per the modifications. The traditional student group is being revitalised, and this action is a part of that endeavour.
But the Union was adamantly against Dr. Samujjal Bhattacharjya, their primary advisor, being proposed for retirement.
In the Duliajan meeting, Bhattacharjya had previously declared in the open that he would be leaving AASU.
"The feelings, consideration, and attachment that the AASU members have given me are overwhelming. I will honour the opinions of our members," the press quoted him as saying.
