Sonowal's political journey commenced with his maiden Lok Sabha candidacy in 2004 under the Asom Gana Parishad banner, where he emerged victorious against former Union Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar in Dibrugarh.

Digital Desk: Sarbananda Sonowal, a prominent figure in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former Chief Minister of Assam, was formally sworn in as a Union Cabinet Minister today. Sonowal, who previously held the position of Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways in the outgoing Lok Sabha, will now continue his tenure in the House of the People as the elected Member of Parliament from Dibrugarh, ensuring his continued significant role within the ministerial council.

Sonowal's political journey commenced with his maiden Lok Sabha candidacy in 2004 under the Asom Gana Parishad banner, where he emerged victorious against former Union Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar in Dibrugarh. Subsequently, in 2011, he transitioned to the BJP and secured re-election to the Lok Sabha in 2014, this time representing the Lakhimpur constituency.

Originating as a student leader in 1992, Sonowal steadily climbed the political ladder to assume the highest administrative position in Assam, serving as the state's Chief Minister from 2016 to 2021 before returning to the national capital. With a wealth of experience garnered from his roles both at the state and central levels, Sonowal's leadership is anticipated to make a significant impact on his contributions to the Union Cabinet.
