Digital Desk: Every year on June 12, World Day Against Child Labor is commemorated as a day dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of child labour and human trafficking.

According to the United Nations, child labour affects more than 160 million children globally, some as young as five years old.

More than one in every four children aged 5 to 17 is said to be working in a job that is harmful to their health and development in the least developed countries.

While low-income countries have a higher percentage of children working, middle-income countries have a higher percentage of children working.

Middle-income countries are home to about 84 million children or 56% of those engaged in child labour. Child labour affects 9% of children in lower-middle-income nations, compared to 7% of children in upper-middle-income countries.

The International Labour Organization, a United Nations entity that regulates the world of labour, declared June 12 as World Day Against Child Labor in 2002.

The day's goal is to ensure that victims of child labour have a normal childhood by providing them with adequate educational and medical assistance.

The Theme for Child Labour Day:

The theme for World Day Against Child Labour 2022 is "Universal Social Protection to End Child Labour."

The theme is devoted to the cause of increasing investment in social protection systems and schemes to establish solid social protection for protecting children from child labour.

Importance of the Day:

The day's objective is to give dignity to children who are victims of child labour and ensure that they receive help for their education, medical care, and other necessities.

Campaigns, events, and programmes have been reported worldwide addressing the negative emotional and physical problems faced by children who are forced into child labour.
