According to a report from PTI, the avalanche occurred today at 12:20 pm on the Jawaharlal Nehru road between Gangtok and Nathula in Sikkim.


Digital Desk: Union Home Minister Amit Shah sent his condolences to the families of those who died in the major avalanche in Sikkim and assured them that the situation is being constantly watched by the centre.

According to Amit Shah, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams would shortly arrive in the affected area.

Amit Shah taking the Twitter wrote, “My sincerest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the tragic avalanche in Sikkim. We are closely monitoring the situation and the teams of NDRF will reach the affected area soon. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured,” Shah said in a tweet.

On the other hand, a tweet from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office read, “Distressed by the avalanche in Sikkim. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I hope the injured recover soon. Rescue ops are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to those affected.”

It should be noted that Tuesday's big avalanche in Sikkim resulted in at least six tourist fatalities.

According to reports, dozens of people were hurt, and numerous tourists are still thought to be buried under the snow. The Sikkim Police are currently conducting search and rescue efforts to find the missing visitors.

In a neighbouring Army Hospital, six persons including four men, a woman, and a kid succumbed to injuries.

The STNM Hospital and Central Referral Hospital in Gangtok have received 30 rescued tourists who were stuck by snow beyond the 15th mile, according to information from the police. Over 150 tourists are still stranded beyond this mile.
