  • Residents of Betbari in Sivasagar are grappling with the immense devastation wrought by the July 20 floods, which wiped out decades of savings and assets in a single night, leaving them facing years of recovery

In Betbari, a village in Sivasagar, Upper Assam, residents are confronting the harsh aftermath of devastating floods that swept through the area on July 20. What many families had spent decades meticulously building was reportedly obliterated in a single night, leaving behind a grim landscape of loss as floodwaters slowly recede.

The scale of destruction is profound, impacting every facet of life. From a grocery shop stocked over years to a newly constructed family home, and a pig farm that sustained an entire household, the losses are extensive. Paddy fields ready for harvest, livestock, invaluable handloom equipment, and lifelong savings all disappeared beneath the deluge, leaving families with little to restart their lives.

The emotional and financial toll is immense. "It will take us at least 10 years to rebuild what we have lost," several villagers shared, expressing deep uncertainty about ever fully recovering from the disaster. Locals reported that the floodwaters rose with alarming speed and little warning, giving families barely enough time to seek safety.

Hirak Deka, a resident of Betbari, recounted the bewildering rapidity of the water's ascent. He noted that while floods are not uncommon, this event was unlike any previous occurrence. Deka suggested that factors such as an elevated highway in the vicinity and the perceived absence of adequate drainage pipelines might have contributed to the rapid inundation, with water flowing in from both the Dorika river and nearby Nazira.

Nearly two weeks after the catastrophe, as parts of Upper Assam see water levels drop, the survivors in Betbari are left to pick up the pieces, facing an arduous and uncertain journey towards rebuilding their shattered lives and livelihoods.
