Digital Desk: The present controversy in the state of Karnataka over whether students should be allowed to wear hijab in educational institutions or not has taken the attention of Actress Sonam Kapoor Ahuja. The Bollywood actress took to Instagram to share a photo of a man wearing a turban and a woman wearing a hijab, with a question “Why can a turban be a choice but a hijab can’t?” Sonam Kapoor’s post came days after demonstrators in Karnataka heckled several women for wearing a hijab. The whole controversy began when the Karnataka government issued an order on February 5 imposing a dress code in all schools and institutions, with a prohibition on garments that “disturb equality, integrity, and public law and order.” Recently, lyricist Javed Akhtar also criticized the purported attacks on women who wear the hijab. Akhtar tweeted, “I have never been in favour of Hijab or Burqa. I still stand by that, but at the same time, I have nothing but deep contempt for these mobs of hooligans who are trying to intimidate a small group of girls and that too unsuccessfully. Is this their idea of ‘MANLINESS’. What a pity.” Meanwhile, the Supreme Court declined to hear urgent petitions against the Karnataka High Court’s interim judgment (the formal order has yet to be issued) prohibiting the hijab and other religious attire from being worn at the state’s schools and colleges on Friday.
