Digital Desk: A day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid a surprise visit to his home and had dinner with his family, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly spoke out on Saturday about his tight relationship with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is a vocal opponent of the BJP.

Mr Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team, also praised Minister and City Mayor Firhad Hakim, describing him as someone who can be contacted at any time of day.

"Mamata Banerjee, our honourable Chief Minister, is a good friend of mine. I had asked her about assisting with the establishment of this institute "At the inauguration of a private hospital here, he added.

Mr. Shah's Friday visit to Mr. Ganguly's home fueled rumours that the former cricketer will enter politics shortly. Mr Ganguly and his wife Dona Ganguly, as well as the cricketer's older brother Snehasish Ganguly and other family members, hosted the dinner.

Mr Shah was joined by Swapan Dasgupta, a BJP idealogue, Sukanta Majumdar, the party's state president, and Suvendu Adhikari, the West Bengal assembly's Leader of Opposition.

Mr Ganguly, aware of the rumours, said on Friday, "Many theories abound, but I've known him (Shah) since 2008. I used to run across him while playing. That's all there is to it ",

He also mentioned working with Shah's son, Jay Amitbhai Shah, at the Indian Board of Control for Cricket. The secretary of the BCCI is Jay Shah.
