Scotland has become the first region of the United Kingdom to adopt a self-identification method for altering gender, following the approval of the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) bill.
Digital Desk: The lower house of Spain's Parliament adopted contentious legislation on Thursday, allowing persons over the age of 16 to change their legally recognized gender without medical supervision.
Minors between the age of 12 and 13 will need a judge's permission to make the transition, while those between the age of 14 and 16 will need to be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.
The Scottish Parliament enacted a bill the same day to make it easier for persons to change their legally recognized gender. Other countries, like as Ireland, Denmark, and Argentina, have passed self-identification laws to make changing gender easier and less invasive.
Except for the Conservatives, the law was supported by the ruling Scottish National Party (SNP) and other parties in parliament.
Some women's rights activists worried that the modifications could endanger the safety of women and girls by making it easier for predatory males to access single-sex spaces like bathrooms.
Shona Robison, Scotland's social justice minister, said comparable laws in other nations had benefitted transgender individuals and resulted in a "remarkable" decrease in violence against them.
