Kabul: Even as the US troops left the country, leaving behind a hoard of weapons and machinery, it seems the Taliban fighters will be scratching their heads most of the time as most of them have been rendered disabled by the US troops.
The US military said it disabled 73 aircraft and 27 Humvees before leaving Kabul. The Taliban is only left now with 48 aircraft, though no information is available on how many of these are operational.
As the US forces left Afghanistan, the Taliban fighters erupted in joy. They marched on the tarmac of the Kabul airport and even fired in the air expressing their happiness and joy at the goodbye of the US.
But just days later, all that has changed.
The Taliban said that they ‘feel betrayed’ as the Americans have disabled all the military helicopters and the planes before they left Kabul, according to a report by Al Jazeera. "We believe it is a national asset and we are the government now and this could have come to great use for us," the report added.
Early on Tuesday, Kabul airport was littered with artifacts of the withdrawal. Inside the terminal were scattered with luggage, piles of clothes, and a lot of documents. CH-46 helicopters used by American forces were parked in a hangar.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid on Wednesday said that their technical teams are "repairing and cleaning" the airport and had advised people not to loiter around the area for the time being.
