Guwahati: On Wednesday, the Sarma-headed Assam government decided to implement lakhs of tea garden laborers employment under the MGNREGS through the lean winter season when tea generation is very limited, officials stated.

During the Assam Cabinet's weekly session, it was determined that tea plantation operators would be granted jobs constructing roads, digging community ponds, or planting trees.

Assam has over 10 lakh tea garden operators in the regulated sector solely. All of them work on the nearby 850 big estates scattered across the tea production belt along the Brahmaputra Valley in the Upper Assam district, including certain parts of the Barak Valley.

Tea gardens in these areas manufacture around 55% of the nation's total output. The operators are a pivotal vote base in around 30 constituencies in Upper Assam.
