New Delhi: The Lok Sabha passes the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, amid protest by the opposition parties on Monday.

During the bill’s introduction by Union Law Minister Kiran Rijiju, MPs from the Congress, DMK and TMC were standing in the well of the House, shouting slogans against the government. They alleged that the bill would violate the citizen’s fundamental rights and demanded to send the bill to a Standing Committee.

Introducing the law, Kiran Rijiju said, “The legislation will end bogus voting in the country and make the electoral process more credible.”

The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, amends the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Representation of the People Act, 1951. It allows the linking of electoral roll data with the Aadhaar and replacing the word ‘wife’ with ‘spouse,’ making the statutes gender-neutral.

Moreover, the bill allows electoral registration officers to ask the aadhaar number of people who want to register as voters to establish their identity.
