Tokyo: World champion Pramod Bhagat has created history by winning a badminton gold and becoming the first Indian player ever to do so at the Paralympics at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020.
Bhagat defeated Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell, 21-14, 21-17 in the final of the men’s singles SL3 category.
This is India’s fourth gold medal of these Paralympics games after Sumit Antil in the men’s javelin throw F64 category, Avani Lekhara in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event, and Manish Narwal in the mixed 50m pistols SH1 event earlier today.
India’s four golds are easily the most in a single edition of the Paralympics.
Earlier, four golds were won by India across 11 editions between 1968 to 2016.
India’s medal tally at the Tokyo Paralympics stands at 17 with four golds, seven silvers, and six bronzes.
India’s previous best was four medals at the New York and Stoke Mandeville Paralympics in 1984 and Rio Paralympics in 2016.
