A complete shutdown in the Barak Valley of Assam following the spine chilling violent clash that ensued in Assam-Mizoram Border.

Normal life in the three districts of Assam’s Barak Valley: Cachar, Hailakandi, Karimganj was utterly affected on Wednesday due to a 12-hour bandh called to protest the killing of seven people, including six policemen, in a recent inter-state boarder clash with Mizoram.

Seven people have been killed and 50 others, including an SP, injured in a bloody clash along the Assam- Mizoram inter-state boarder on Monday.

The shutdown was called by Barak Democratic Front (BDF). The shutdown started at 5 in the morning of Wednesday and will continue till 5 pm.

The 12-hour shutdown has been successful thus far with all establishments keeping their shutters down in the three districts of Barak Valley. Train services, however, have remained unaffected so far, a spokesperson of the Northeast Frontier (NF) Railway said.

The people in the Barak Valley have responded to the Bandh call in total. Streets in all the towns and villages of the three Barak Valley districts are wearing a deserted look.

Tensions have been running high in Assam and Mizoram following clashes between the police forces of the two states along the inter-state border on Monday.

Earlier on Tuesday, Assam chief minister claimed that Mizoram Police had opened fire with light machine guns (LMGs) that claimed the lives of six Assam Police personnel and one civilian.

“Mizoram had opened fire with light machine guns (LMGs) for about 30 to 35 minutes,” the Assam chief minister had said.

The two states share a 164.6-km border between Assam's Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts and Mizoram's Kolasib, Mamit and Aizawl districts.
