Digital Desk: 21 universities have been labelled as phoney by the University Grants Commission (UGC), which also stated that they lack the authority to grant degrees to students. The University Grants Commission Act of 1956 has been violated by the 21 fictitious institutions. Four of these phoney universities are in Uttar Pradesh, and eight are in Delhi. Each of the states of West Bengal and Odisha has two fictitious universities. whereas Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, and Karnataka each have one.

According to a UGC statement, universities can only award degrees if they were founded by an organisation that is regarded to be a university or by a central, state, or provincial law. The statement goes on to say that institutions specifically granted authority by a Parliamentary Act may also provide degrees to pupils. The list of universities released today has been labelled by the UGC as "self-styled, unrecognised institutions" without the authority to award degrees.

The UGC released a statement saying, "Students and the general public are thus advised that the following 21 self-styled, unrecognised institutions that are operating in violation of the UGC Act have been branded as fake universities and these are not empowered to confer any degree."

Commercial University Ltd., United Nations University, Vocational University, ADR-Centric Juridical University, Indian Institution of Science and Engineering, All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences (AIIPPHS),

The fraudulent institutions from Delhi include Adhyatmik Vishwavidyalaya (Spiritual University) and Viswakarma Open University for Self-employment.

The following institutions have been identified as forgeries: Christ New Testament Deemed University of Andhra Pradesh; St. John's University, Kishanattam, Kerala; Raja Arabic University, Nagpur, Maharashtra; Badaganvi Sarkar World Open University Education Society of Karnataka.

The phoney universities in Odisha are the Nababharat Shiksha Parishad and North Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, while the false universities in West Bengal are the Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine and Institute of Alternative Medicine and Research.

Gandhi Hindi Vidyapith in Prayag, the National University of Electro Complex Homeopathy in Kanpur, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University, and the Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad in Bharat Bhawan have all been labelled as bogus institutions by the UGC.
