Digital Desk: The anti-talks faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-Independent) has strongly criticized Assam Police for what they claim to be the unjust detention of youths in connection with recent grenade blasts in the state. Following the explosions in Tinsukia and Sivsagar districts on November 22 and December 9, respectively, the outfit accused the Assam Police of randomly detaining innocent individuals for questioning.

In a public letter, ULFA-I accused the Assam Police of apprehending youths from various parts of the state, including Guwahati, under suspicion of involvement in the recent attacks. The militant group vehemently denied the detained individuals' association with ULFA-I or any participation in the said military operations.

"The actions of the Assam Police in arbitrarily detaining these innocent youths are an attempt to mask their shortcomings and evade responsibility," stated ULFA-I in their letter. They further condemned these acts by the Assam Police, labeling them as condemnable.
ULFA-I press statement

The first blast near an army camp in Tinsukia, initially attributed to ULFA-I by police, was only claimed by the outfit after the subsequent explosion in Sivsagar. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the December 9 attack, yet these incidents have reignited memories of Assam's insurgency in the 1990s.

Despite claims by the Union Home Ministry regarding the containment of insurgency, regions affected by these recent attacks remain under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. ULFA-I's accusations against Assam Police raise questions about the strategies employed in tackling insurgency and ensuring justice amidst the ongoing security challenges in the state.
