AI requires robust infrastructure, including energy supply and data centers to power GPUs and TPUs
Digital Desk: The United States has identified India as a crucial partner in securing global supply chains for artificial intelligence (AI) and semiconductors, highlighting growing strategic cooperation between the two countries in emerging technologies.
Speaking at a special session on the sidelines of the AI-India Impact Summit in New Delhi, Sriram Krishnan, Senior White House Policy Advisor on Artificial Intelligence, underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships with India to leverage American innovation for the benefit of Indian citizens.
Krishnan noted that leading AI model companies are currently based in the United States and that the country is investing heavily in AI infrastructure, including advanced GPUs and AI chips. He said the US aims to position itself as the best global partner in AI development.
Referring to India, Krishnan said the key question is how AI can be used to improve the quality of life for citizens. He cited education as one example, revealing that an Education Task Force has been established in the US to explore how AI can be integrated into classrooms, not to replace teachers, but to support and empower them. He added that similar applications could be explored in healthcare and other public service sectors.
Krishnan emphasized that countries like India can leverage American innovation and investment in AI to build services and tools tailored to their citizens’ needs.
He also outlined America’s AI Action Plan, which is built on three policy pillars: accelerating innovation, building AI infrastructure, and leading international diplomacy and security in the AI domain.
According to Krishnan, AI requires robust infrastructure, including energy supply and data centers to power GPUs and TPUs. The US government is therefore focused on enabling the expansion of infrastructure, including grid systems and energy sources such as gas turbines and nuclear power. The second pillar aims to unlock innovation and support leading AI companies driving scientific and technological breakthroughs.
Describing the current period as transformative, Krishnan said AI is set to reshape scientific discovery and daily life, calling it one of the most significant technological shifts in human history.
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington, DC, in February 2025, India and the United States launched the TRUST (Transforming the Relationship Utilizing Strategic Technology) initiative. The initiative seeks to enhance collaboration between governments, academia, and the private sector in critical and emerging technologies, including defense, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum computing, biotechnology, energy, and space.
As part of TRUST, both countries have committed to working with private industry to develop a U.S.-India Roadmap on Accelerating AI Infrastructure by the end of 2025. They have also pledged to build trusted and resilient supply chains for semiconductors, critical minerals, advanced materials, and pharmaceuticals.
The renewed focus on AI and semiconductor collaboration reflects deepening strategic ties between the two nations amid rapid global technological transformation.
