Digital Desk: A gruesome murder has sent shockwaves through the Beltola Bashisthapur area of Guwahati, where a woman was allegedly killed and dismembered by husband.
The victim, identified as Riya Talukdar Goswami, was brutally killed by her husband, Ramanujan Goswami, in a chilling act of domestic violence.
According to preliminary reports, the perpetrator decapitated the victim and severed her fingers.
In a gruesome turn of events, the suspect allegedly packed the severed head into a black polythene bag and stored it inside the refrigerator, while the remainder of the body was left on the floor beside the bed.
The crime came to light after neighbours, alerted by a foul odor emanating from the residence, notified the authorities. Upon entering the locked room, police discovered the victim's remains.
Police recovered a machete, suspected to be the murder weapon, alongside several empty liquor bottles at the scene. A team from the Hatigaon Police Station has launched an investigation, joined by forensic and fingerprint experts.
The incident occurred at House No. 14, By-Lane No. 4 in Bashisthapur, within the 'Anjali Griha' apartment complex.
Ramanujan, who has a history of substance abuse and recently completed a three-month stint in rehabilitation, was observed with a fresh haircut on Saturday. On the same day, neighbours reported hearing a violent altercation and harrowing wails emanating from the residence.
Following the crime, he reportedly exited the flat, securing the door from the outside using a sock rather than locking it.
Further investigation revealed that Ramanujan allegedly planned to chop Riya's body into pieces and feed it to dogs. However, he claimed to have refrained after feeling a sudden wave of affection for her. Instead, he remained at the scene, consuming food and alcohol while sitting beside her corpse.
Ramanujan surrendered on Sunday night and was subsequently arrested by the police. Following a medical examination, he was taken to the Hatigaon Police Station.
At the time of his surrender, bloodstains were present on the clothes he was wearing. In a bid to destroy evidence, he reportedly smashed both his and his wife's mobile phones.
Ramanujan confessed to the murder before the police, claiming he killed his wife due to an extramarital affair.
The victim, Riya was a resident of Noonmati and worked at a boutique in Fancy Bazar. Having lost both her parents, she is survived only by her brother.
Ramanujan, a native of Gauripur, is reportedly the nephew of Jayashree Goswami, the wife of former Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.
