Digital Desk: A shooter opened fire at a dancing studio in the US state of California on Saturday night, leaving up to ten people dead and a number of others hurt.

The incident reportedly happened at Monterey Park about 10 p.m. local time, close to where a Chinese Lunar New Year event was taking place.

The injured were promptly taken to several local hospitals. It wasn't known if a suspect was in police custody.

One of the biggest events in the area, the Lunar New Year celebrations, drew tens of thousands of people to the location.

People were eating skewers and buying for jewellery and Chinese food earlier on Saturday.

The New Year's Eve celebrations were planned to go from 10 am to 9 pm. The presence of police and fire units on Garvey Avenue and the treatment of casualties were captured on social media videos.

Owner of the Clam House seafood BBQ across the street from the scene of the shooting, Seung Won Choi, claimed that three people barged in and ordered him to lock the door.

According to the complaint, three individuals informed him that a man brandishing a machine gun was present nearby. Choi claims that witnesses also informed him that the shooter carried a number of rounds of ammunition. (with inputs from ANI)
