Chennai: V Kalyanam, who was the last personal secretary of Mahatma Gandhi passes away in Chennai. He dies at the age of 99, due to his health-related problems.

He took his last breath at his younger daughters' residence in Padur at 3.30 pm. His last rites will be performed at Besant Nagar crematorium at 01:30 pm on May 5.

Kalyanam was born in Shimla on August 15, 1922. he was working for Gandhi from 1944 to 1948, according to Kalyanam’s biographer Kumari S Neelakandan.

"Kalyanam was in Sevagram Ashram in Maharashtra and was engaged in compiling the letters to Mahatma Gandhi in various languages. He had been assisting the Father of Nation for four years," he added.

Kalyanam was with Mahatma Gandhi when Gandhi was assassinated in New Delhi on January 30, 1948.
