Digital desk: Assam's governor Gulab Chand Kataria signed an order amending the Assam Motor Vehicle Taxation Act, 1936 that doubled the taxes on both two- and four-wheel vehicles, reports stated on Thursday.

The ordinance will be called, The Assam Motor Vehicle Taxation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2023, according to the notification that was made official. It will have the same scope as the main act and take effect immediately.

As per the proposal, vehicles valued at Rs. 3 lakh will be taxed at 4.5 percent, those costing between Rs. 3 lahks and Rs. 10 lakh at 7 percent, and those costing between Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 20 lakh at 10 percent. Vehicles costing more than Rs 20 lakh will be taxed at a rate equal to 14% of the purchase price.

Meanwhile, two-wheelers priced up to Rs. 1 lakh will be subject to a 6 percent tax, those priced between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh to an 8 percent tax, and vehicles priced over Rs. 3 lakh to a 9 percent tax.

Additionally, taxes on tractors, vehicles used to transport goods, and mechanical cranes placed on motor vehicles have also increased.
