Rescue teams and police officers rushed to the scene on Wednesday to assess the danger and potential gas contamination, and they warned visitors not to come.

Digital Desk: After a volcano erupted in Iceland, red-hot lava flowed out, mesmerising tourists and spectators who were seen taking in the breathtaking view. After days of seismic activity, the Geldingadalir volcano erupted on Wednesday in an uninhabited valley near Reykjavik.

A video tweeted by the news agency AFP showed people dressed in layers of winter clothing standing near the volcanic activity. On a windy day, the video shows glowing red lava gushing from the ground and bluish smoke rising from the site. A person is also seen with their camera, capturing the moment. An audible roar can be heard as lava spills from the volcano.

The eruption occurred about 40 kilometres from Reykjavik, near Mount Fagradalsfjall in southwestern Iceland, which erupted for six months between March and September 2021.The Wednesday eruption came after a period of intense seismic activity, with approximately 10,000 earthquakes detected since Saturday, including two with magnitudes of at least 5.0.

Rescue teams and police officers rushed to the scene on Wednesday to assess the danger and potential gas contamination, and they warned visitors not to come.

Iceland's President, Gudni Johannesson, who was driving near the eruption site on Wednesday, echoed that call.

"I simply want people to be cautious and well-informed before venturing into the unknown." "There will be plenty of time if this eruption is anything like the last, so there is no need to rush," he told the English-language news outlet Iceland Monitor.
