Phogat made history on Tuesday by becoming the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic wrestling final.

Digital Desk: Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who was disqualified from the 50kg freestyle final at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Wednesday, plans to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The 29-year-old wrestler exceeded the weight limit slightly during the final's weigh-in, leading to her disqualification and an empty-handed return to India.

Phogat is appealing for the silver medal following her historic run to the final. The CAS has requested until tomorrow morning, Thursday at 11:30 am IST, to deliver its final decision. If CAS rules in Phogat's favor, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will be required to award her a joint silver medal, as CAS decisions are binding.

CAS, based in Switzerland, is an international body that resolves sports-related disputes.

Phogat made history on Tuesday by becoming the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic wrestling final. She garnered attention at the event in France by defeating reigning Olympic gold medalist Yui Susaki in the Round of 16, then continued her winning streak with a victory over Ukraine’s Oksana Livach in the quarterfinals. Phogat secured her place in the final with a dominant performance against Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez in the semifinals.

Unfortunately, on the second day of the event, during the weigh-in, Phogat missed the weight limit by just 100 grams, leading to her disqualification.
