According to an ICMR report, India now has over 101 million diabetics, up from 70 million in 2019.

The majority of cases are type 3 diabetes, also known as diabetes mellitus, which is a type of disease associated to obesity and is essentially a lifestyle disorder that can be reversed.

The good news is that both prediabetes (higher-than-normal blood sugar levels) and type 2 diabetes are usually avoidable.

TIPS TO REDUCE THE RISK OF DIABETES

Manage your bodyweight

The most common cause of type 2 diabetes is obesity. Obesity raises the likelihood of getting this condition. So controlling your weight and monitoring your BMI can help lower your risk.

Exercise

To manage your body weight, you have to begin a routine that involves you moving for at least 45 minutes a day. Exercising improves the body's ability to use insulin (a hormone associated with diabetes) and absorb glucose.

Make some dietary changes

One of the first and most important dietary changes you must make is to reduce your sugar intake. Reduce your intake of white processed sugars and increase your intake of whole grains. Create a diet high in proteins and healthy fats while limiting processed and red meat.

Limit alcohol consumption

Alcohol use increases the risk of not just diabetes but also cardiovascular disease.
