Among the weapons of choice for jihadists are mines and improvised explosive devices...

Digital Desk: An explosion on a bus in central Mali on Thursday killed at least 11 people and injured dozens of others.

The bus was hit with an explosive device on the road between Bandiagara and Goundaka in the Mopti region, which is known as a hotspot for jihadist violence.

Mali has long battled a terrorist insurgency that has taken thousands of lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Among the weapons of choice for jihadists are mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). These weapons have the ability to be remotely detonated or explode upon hit.

Previously, a report by the UN mission in Mali, MINUSMA, stated that mines and IEDs had killed 72 people, with the bulk of the casualties being military and a quarter being civilians.
