Barsha Rani Bishaya, an actress, has supported the anti-child marriage campaign...

Digital Desk: Following the declaration made by Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state police have increased their efforts to prevent child marriage. Until Saturday morning, police detained 2,170 persons in the child marriage investigation.

The groom and his family members, as well as the married priest and maulvi, were all detained.

The initiative by the Assam Police has been sharply criticised by numerous political parties and organisations, while actress Barsha Rani Bishaya has supported the anti-child marriage campaign.

Speaking to the press while attending a cultural event, the actress stated, "Child marriage is a pre-existing felony under our Constitution. As a result, I applaud the government's efforts in this area."

The actress also stated that child weddings should be prohibited.

It may be noted that on January 23, a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma resolved to launch a nationwide campaign against child marriage.

Since the night of February 2, the campaign against this judgement has been in full force.

Assam Police spokesperson Prashant Kumar Bhuiyan told the reporters on Saturday, "Arrests in connection with child marriage cases are on the rise. Until this morning, police have arrested 2170 persons."
