Delhi’s two famous restaurants, Moti Mahal and Daryaganj are currently in a legal dispute over the title of these Indian.


Digital Desk: A battle over the invention of popular Indian dishes, Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani has landed in the Delhi High Court, stirring up a debate on “Who invented Butter Chicken and Dal Makhnai”. 

Delhi’s two famous restaurants, Moti Mahal and Daryaganj are currently in a legal dispute over the title of these Indian.

According to the Bar and Bench, this legal battle began when Moti Mahal has filed a lawsuit against the owners of Daryaganj restaurant, alleging that they are misleading the public by suggesting a connection between the two establishments. 

Justice Sanjeev Narula, who is hearing the case has requested the owner written from Daryaganj restaurant  within a month.

Moti Mahal attributes the creation of these dishes to their founder Kundal Lal Gujral and claim that ‘these dishes have become synonymous with Indian cuisine globally due to Mr Gujral's culinary genius’.

Meanwhile, Daryaganj claims that Kundal Lal Jaggi came up with the dishes, dismissing the lawsuit as "baseless".

The Bar and Bench reported that Daryaganj argued with Moti Mahal restaurant and emphasized that Moti Mahal restaurant in Peshawar, Pakistan was a joint venture between the predecessors of both parties - Gujral of Moti Mahal and Jaggi of Daryaganj.

The court is scheduled to hear the matter on May 29 until then the debate over who is the "inventor of butter chicken and dal makhani" will go on.
