Digital Desk: Delhi schools up to class 5 will remain closed for the next five days due to the cold weather.
An earlier order on the extension of winter vacation in schools throughout the nation's capital was rescinded by the Delhi government. Not long after it was released, it was reversed. The original directive, which prolonged the winter break, was mistakenly issued, according to the Department of Education. On January 8, a decision was expected to be made on the subject.
The revised order stated, "Order No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2024/18 dated: January 6, 2024, regarding the extension of Winter Vacation stands withdrawn with immediate effect. Further instructions on this matter may be issued in due course," as reported by ANI.
The Arvind Kejriwal administration previously issued an order extending the winter vacation for all recognized private schools in the national capital territory (NCT)—both government-aided and unaided—until January 10. The order cited "extreme cold waves and IMD's yellow alert."
"Primary schools in Delhi, which run up to class 5, would stay closed for an additional week. Classes six onward will resume in the schools, but they have been explicitly instructed not to operate before eight in the morning or after five in the evening,", according to Delhi Education Minister Atishi.
Delhi residents were impacted by cloudy and misty conditions on January 6. 15.2 degrees Celsius was the hottest temperature of the day. 8.9 degrees was the low in the early morning.
Cold weather
Previous to this, Delhi was hit by cold weather, with the capital city's minimum temperature on January 2 reaching 8.3 degrees Celsius—a degree above average. Previously, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that Delhi had a minimum temperature of 6 degrees Celsius.
RWFC Delhi reported that through January 7, there were isolated areas in Delhi, Haryana, and Chandigarh that would see chilly days or extremely cold days with dense to very dense fog.
Early winter break
An early winter vacation for students in Delhi, from November 9 to November 18, has been announced by the government. There was "severe" air pollution.
"All schools' December winter break has been rescheduled to take place from November 9–18 due to air pollution," the notification stated.
