The signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the foundation of the ITU are commemorated on May 17 as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

Digital Desk: In a bid to raise awareness of the benefits that the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICT) can offer to society and economies, WTISD (World Telecommunication and Information Society Day) is observed every year.

The signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the foundation of the ITU are commemorated on May 17 as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.

Notably, World Telecommunication Day and Society Day 2022 have been united from World Information Society Day and World Telecommunication Society Day.

World Telecommunication Day commemorates the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865, whereas World Information Day emphasizes the importance of information technology and the wide range of issues raised by the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS).

ITU members have produced life-saving and economic-sustaining services.

This year the theme for World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is “Digital technology for older persons and healthy ageing.”

The theme emphasizes the need to employ telecommunications and information communication technologies (ICTs) for the elderly to be healthy, connected, and independent.
